Preference versus personalised nutrition - are you eating what you want or what you need?

Most of us eat the way we do because it’s familiar. We’re drawn to foods we’ve grown up with, foods that feel comforting, or foods that fit our lifestyle, beliefs, or social life. This is what I call preference nutrition — eating based on habits, taste, convenience or identity.

Personalised nutrition, however, takes a very different approach. Instead of asking “What do I like to eat?” it asks “What does my body actually need to thrive?” And the answers can be truly eye-opening.

What is personalised nutrition?

Personalised nutrition is based on you — your unique biochemistry, your biomarkers, and how your body responds to food. Rather than following general dietary trends or one-size-fits-all advice, personalised nutrition identifies the specific foods that best support your metabolism, blood sugar balance, hormones, digestion, and overall vitality.

Humans are creatures of habit, so it’s completely understandable that change can feel difficult at first. Food choices are often deeply ingrained, emotional and tied to routine. Yet this is also where many people get stuck — especially those who feel they’ve been on the diet yo-yo for years.

And if you keep doing what you’ve always done, you’re likely to keep getting the same results.

Personalised nutrition offers a way off that cycle. Instead of willpower, restriction or constant starting again, it provides clarity. And when the body is finally given what it needs, something remarkable happens: cravings settle, energy improves, and food choices begin to feel easier and more natural.

Beliefs, values and health - finding your own balance

Food choices are shaped by more than biology alone. Religious, cultural, ethical or environmental beliefs can all influence how we eat — and these deserve respect.

Personalised nutrition doesn’t force you to abandon your values. Instead, it gives you awareness. You gain insight into which foods would best support your health, and from there, you can make informed, empowered choices.

A well-known example of this balance is the Dalai Lama. As a Tibetan Buddhist, he prefers a vegetarian diet. Yet he eats chicken once a week, recognising that his brain function and vitality benefit from some animal protein. It’s a powerful reminder that awareness allows us to care for our health while still honouring our beliefs.

How Metabolic Balance® supports personalised nutrition

Metabolic Balance® is a structured, evidence-based approach to personalised nutrition that uses your individual blood values to create a nutrition plan tailored specifically to you. It focuses on real, everyday food — not calorie counting, meal replacements or supplements — and works to reset your body’s natural metabolism, rebalance hormones, and reduce inflammation.

These three factors are very often at the root of persistent weight struggles, low energy, and many chronic health concerns.

The programme is built around eight clear nutritional guidelines, which work together to stabilise blood sugar, support hormones, and allow the metabolism to recover:

  1. Eat three meals a day

  2. Leave at least five hours between meals

  3. Avoid snacking

  4. Include one type of protein with every meal

  5. Eat slowly and mindfully but no longer than an hour

  6. Finish eating by 9pm – or even better 8pm

  7. Drink adequate water (35ml per kilogram of body weight)

  8. Eat an apple a day

Following these guidelines alone can already bring noticeable improvements — better digestion, more stable energy, improved sleep, and fewer cravings.

But the real shift happens (and often quite quickly) with your personalised food list.

The personalised food list - the real gold nugget

This is where Metabolic Balance® moves beyond “healthy eating” and into true personalisation. Your food list is based entirely on your biochemistry and shows you exactly which foods support your metabolism and which quietly hold it back or even work against it. There is no guesswork, no conflicting advice, and no constant self-discipline required. When you consistently eat foods that are right for your body, balance is restored naturally — and sustainable health becomes not something you chase, but something you finally experience.

Based on your blood analysis, the Metabolic Balance® plan provides you with a food list that identifies the specific proteins, vegetables, fruits, carbohydrates, and fats that best suit your metabolism. There is no guessing, no trends to follow, and no “good” or “bad” foods — only foods that work for you, and foods that don’t.

Many people are surprised to learn that foods they believed were “healthy” are actually holding them back, while others they had avoided are exactly what their body needs.

This level of precision is what sets personalised nutrition apart — and why Metabolic Balance® has scientific evidence demonstrating its effectiveness.

Change doesn't have to be hard

Change can feel daunting — especially if you’ve tried many approaches before. But it doesn’t have to be overwhelming.

What I often say to my clients is this:

  • Give me two days, and you’ll see how manageable this really is.

  • Give me two weeks, and you’ll start to feel noticeably better.

  • Give me two months, and you’ll feel unstoppable.

This isn’t about perfection. It’s about giving your body the chance to reset, rebalance, and finally work with you rather than against you.
